Who are the poor? Where are they? Can we still think and speak of “the poor” in a time when everyone claims their own lack, when (pseudo-)autonomous individuals stand alone, and when “class” seems to have disappeared? The Poor examines the symptoms of a generational collectivity within the contemporary art scene. It also invokes “poor art” to explore a practice that emerges from deficiency, proliferates through scarcity, and ultimately transcends it in unexpected ways. The exhibition reflects on a shared sense of precarity, the rapid naturalization of proliferating “poor images,” and the ambivalence of their affirmation and critique.
